COVID-19, An Opportunity to reset our Values & Priorities

Home COVID-19, An Opportunity to reset our Values & Priorities

The COVID-19 pandemic news across the globe continues to be horrific. We all have a moral & societal duty to control the spread and support each other. Its difficult to see a silver lining through it all when the infection and death counts continue to mount while livelihoods get depressed. So perhaps, we should stop looking for a comforting angle but rather view this period as an opportunity for individual and collective reset.

Perhaps this period is an opportunity to reset who sits on the societal pedestals. Bankers, lawyers, politicians, corporate leaders, sports personalities, social media influencers are all rightly respected and are highly celebrated, but, as COVID-19 unmasks the society, the fabric is shouldered by teachers, nurses, doctors, health-workers, cleaners, care-givers and security guards. They are at the forefront of the pandemic and their absence raises fear and uncertainty in our lives. Perhaps we should be celebrating teachers and health-workers more than our politicians. Perhaps we should pay them up to their importance level. Perhaps we should ensure this & the coming generations, do not overlook them as past ones have.

Perhaps this period is an opportunity to reset our relationships. Many have invested heavily in their careers, forged professional networks, advanced and devoted resources for career advancements at the expense of their families. As such, it’s easier to be with your acquaintances than to be isolated with your spouse, children, siblings and parents. If you are feeling forced to be with your supposed loved ones at this time, then perhaps it’s an opportunity to invest in a happy home and strike a balance between career and family.

Perhaps this period is an opportunity to reset our economic &/or political ideologies. Capitalism has long been perpetuated as the ingredient for economic and societal prosperity while the S-word has globally been tarnished to be a swear word and acknowledged, in certain quarters, as unpatriotic. Perhaps elements of Socialism have a place in the modern world after all. Perhaps free equal healthcare and education for all, guaranteed security and access to clean water are national investments worth making.

The economics of a safe, healthy and educated population is undefeated. Yet it does not serve the interests of a select few so it may not be worthwhile. Perhaps now is the opportunity for policy makers to re-prioritise the national objectives to the core foundations that are felt by the wider population.

Perhaps this period is an opportunity to evolve our personalities and habits. During our regular grind, we may struggle to uphold our faith or religious beliefs, we may not prioritise a healthy lifestyle and as much as we hope to sustain it, we deselect continuous learning and supporting the community. It may equally be an opportunity to finally make the most of your Netflix subscription, but perhaps we should use this period as a springboard for the versions of ourselves we aspire to be.

We are in unprecedented times and we all have an obligation to at least take the virus seriously and contain its spread. Infections and deaths are a statistic for you until its home and has a name. Its a time to support each other as not all society members have a guaranteed income or savings to see them through this period. Its not a time to politicise the pandemic but rather, to make the right decisions immaterial of party allegiances. Lives are at stake and history will judge us on the decisions and actions we take. We may not come through this period better than we entered it, but perhaps it is an opportunity to revisit our values, reset our priorities, re-shape our societal fibre and be a version that would make the world a better place.
